Ecole d'été 2019

The SPS Summer School 2019 is a one-week programme for outstanding and enthusiastic PhD students, as well as young post-docs, who have a question involving plant specialized metabolites in their project and want to acquire excellent training in this field.

It will address, through keynote seminars, focused seminars and practical courses, the following scientific topics:
- Translational biology / Synthetic biology
- Structure/function relationship
- Biosynthetic and regulatory pathways
- Structural and analytical chemistry
- Integrative biology

The Summer School will bring together 12 participants from all over the world and offer them the chance to receive scientific training in an international and rather informal atmosphere, facilitating exchanges.

Topics and invited speakers

The SPS Summer School 2019 will include:

> Theoretical modules
Leading scientists will hold lectures on the topics of the summer school, giving the participants a comprehensive insight into the latest research findings and identifying key open questions in the field.

       - Keynotes (4/6 hours):
David Touboul, ICSN, Gif-sur –Yvette, France:
“Mass-spectrometry-based approaches for the characterization of plant secondary metabolites”
            Emmanuel Gaquerel, IBMP, Strasbourg, France:
“Metabolomics-assisted dissection of plants’ metabolic innovations”
            Ivo Feussner, Goettingen University, Germany:
“What the transcriptome does not tell – the metabolome is closer to the phenotype”

       - Focused seminars (6 hours):
            Flavonoids (Coord.: Loic Lepiniec, IJPB)
            Lipids (Coord.: J.D. Faure, IJPB)
Carotenoids and derivatives (Coord.: M. Dufresne, IPS2)
            Terpenes (Coord.: A. Boualem, IPS2)

> Practical sessions (12 hours)
During the practical sessions, the participants will proceed to the harvesting, extraction, chemical analysis and data analysis of plant samples.
They will have to choose one of the following practical sessions:
       - Metabolomics using GC-MS analysis (G. Clément)
       - Plant hormones quantification by UHPLC-MS/MS (S. Citerne and G. Mouille)
       - Fatty acid analysis by GC-MS and LC-UV (J.D. Faure and J.L. Cacas)
       - Specialized metabolites profiling and identification using UPLC-HRMS (S. Boutet-Mercey and F. Perreau)

> Presentations of the participants’ projects

> Visits of SPS labs

> Cultural excursion

This varied programme will give plenty of opportunities for discussion with speakers and the other participants.
